Call me a Grinch, but I get tired of hearing the same Christmas songs over and over again. During this time of year, there’s a station in my hometown that plays like 30 or so Christmas songs on repeat, and sometimes I feel like I might go crazy if I hear “Jingle Bells” one more time.
Naturally, I’m always on the hunt for a Christmas song or a version I haven’t heard. If you’re also itching to hear some new Christmas tunes, just check out what people around the world are listening to. I’ve done a little research and found some cool ones that are popular in other countries but don’t get any airtime in the U.S. Enjoy!
RUSSIA
В лесу родилась ёлочка (The Forest Raised a Christmas Tree)
This song started as poem written by a teacher in 1903 and was put to music in 1905. It is now one of the most famous holiday songs in Russia.

SPAIN/LATIN AMERICA
Los Peces en el Río (The Fish in the River)
If you are wondering what fish have to do with Christmas, they are drinking because they are happy that Jesus was born. This rocking flamenco version by the Gipsy Kings makes this traditional song even more fun!
FRANCE
Il Est Né le Divin Enfant (He is Born, the Divine Child)
This classic French carol was first published in 1862. The lyrics talk about the birth of Jesus, but the melody was actually taken from a 17th century hunting song.
BRAZIL
O Velhinho (The Old Man)
Here’s a pop version of a traditional Christmas song in Portuguese. It’s an ode to Santa Claus, or Papai Noel, as the Brazilians call him. Pretty catchy, right?
AUSTRIA
Still, Still, Still (Hush, Hush, Hush)
This famous song debuted in 1865. Sung in German, it doubles a Christmas carol and a lullaby. Beautiful!
